Nike Smart Recovery Cleats: A New Product Concept
For my final project, I am choosing Nike as the Fortune 500 company I would like to focus on. I chose Nike because Nike is one of the most well known and largest sports apparel brands in the world. I chose Nike because I can relate to their products from my experience in sports and football. As an athlete, I use many Nike products in football such as cleats, apparel and equipment. Nike has made itself as a company known for products that will improve athletic performance while also maintaining great style.
Nike is a leader in the sports apparel, shoe and equipment industry and with their catch phrase “Just Do It” the company works on motivation, hard work, and confidence. Many athletes and younger individuals believe and trust in Nike because of the company’s ties with the pro athletes, performance and culture. It is expected that Nike will continue to develop high quality products to increase athletic performance and comfort. Consumers will also buy smart products by Nike since Nike has already introduced various products such as a smart fitness application and performance tracking technology.
The new product concept that I have chosen is the Nike Smart Recovery Cleats. This product will be designed for football cleats and integrate recovery and tracking technology to prevent injury and improve performance. Through the use of sensors placed in the sole of the cleats, the Nike Smart Recovery Cleats will monitor foot pressure, speed, motion and fatigue of the athlete wearing them. These readings would then upload to a Nike mobile application which will give the athlete advice for recovery, stretching routines, and injury prevention suggestions.
The target audience for the Nike Smart Recovery Cleats would primarily be high school, college and pro level athletes. Most younger athletes will intensely train but not use the recovery and injury prevention. This is an issue that is in the sports industry that Nike can solve. The consumers hope that equipment can improve their athletic performance and health. Parents and coaches will agree with this concept because lowers injuries would mean fewer lost games and practices for their athletes.
The benefits of buying the Nike Smart Recovery Cleats will be injury prevention, performance tracking, and personalized recovery options. Athletes will be able to record their training tendencies to prevent injuries before they happen. The reason I chose this concept is because the high number of injuries within sports, mainly football and the growth technology has in athletics.
The research objectives for this product would be the target audience and competitors. Nike will have to determine the population that would most likely purchase this product, would the costumers pay more for smart technology within a football cleat? Nike will also have to track the growth of wearable sports technology and the expectations that the athletes have.
Competitor research in to Adidas and Under Armour is important because each company makes football cleats as well as technology related products for athletics. Nike would find the specifications of competitors products like, pricing strategies, marketing techniques and consumer reactions. Other factors would also impact the success of this product, like technology updates, price of shoes, and if they are eco-friendly shoes.
To gather information, Nike would collect primary and secondary information. Secondary information will include studies on athletic technology, trends in the sports industry, product reviews and competitor analysis. Primary data will come from surveys and interviews with target audience athletes, coaches and parents.
I believe the Nike Smart Recovery Cleats will be a successful product because it will combine athleticism with new and innovative technology. Nike’s reputation within sports would make consumers easily accept this new concept.
